Public concrete seat
This project was part of a group work for a course at the American University of Beirut. The course had us experiment with various materials, shapes, structures and form finding techniques that would help us develop and outdoor seating element. Inspired by Frei Otto’s bubble film form finding method, we developed our own experiment where we pushed and pulled on a textile mesh tensioned within a square metal frame. We experimented on a small scale with various materials such as jesmonite and gypsum. We discovered that the material was too brittle to hold on a 1:1 model. We decided to use concrete.
